Dog Shampoo, what type is the best?

I've heard of people using regular shampoo on their dogs. Is that a good idea? I'm thinking like maybe good-quality baby shampoo or something.

If it isn't, what would be the best shampoo/conditioners to use on a single-coated silky-fur type breed? How about for a normal short-haired double coated dog? What kind will make the dog smell the best, and is it really such a good idea to ask the petstore? My thought there is, ';If my PSYCHIATRIST was pushing crappy meds on me, what makes me think petstores wouldn't push crappy shampoo?';

And I'm serious about the meds thing. Never let your doc pull you off meds cold turkey in opt for a half dose of a single medication when you were on double doses of 3 kinds of meds.Dog Shampoo, what type is the best?
Target sells a great product called ';Just add water'; and I think is comes in 3 flavors. My favorite is the coconut and I get the perfume spray for afterwards.

Make sure the shampoo you purchase has oatmal in it - it will prevent skin from drying out.

I have a lab and they are prone to dry skin and I have never had a problem, if that answers your double-coat short hair question.Dog Shampoo, what type is the best?
I actually use Human Shampoo on my (believe it or not) cat and dog. If you leave the shampoo on the animal for a couple minutes, it KILLS the FLEAS! When we discovered this, We stopped buying little $10 flea killer shampoo bottles that didn't kill the fleas. That is my only suggestion on shampoo on animals. When we wash our cat, it makes his hair silky and soft. But I think that is because there isn't any dirt on it. But, I don't know anything else about shampoo on animals.
try going for the profeestional kind. You may want to check your dog's hair type. is it oily? does he or she dandruff? dry? try going for the naturals. they work work pretty well
I've heard that Selson blue is the best human shampoo to use on dogs. I use Victory 777 on mine and it makes her smell good and her coat is shinny.
Do NOT use people products. They will remove all the natural oils and dry out the coat. Most dog shampoos are about the same, unless you're one of those all-natural freaks. I use Buddy Wash on my lab.
Try an Ajax/Clorox combo. (just kiddin...) I dunno....Don't have a dog!=)

What brand of Dog Shampoo do you buy?

Hi! I am doing a project for school, in which I need to poll some people on a product that they buy - and I would like to know about dog shampoo. Please answer the following questions about dog shampoo:

1) Why did you need to buy dog shampoo?

2) What were your choices?

3) Why did you choose to buy the brand that you did?

4) Where did you choose to buy your shampoo? Why?

5)How did you feel about your purchase after you bought it?

6) Would you buy it again? Why or why not?

7) Do you have a family or just you and your dog? (This question is to see if people make different decisions based on family size)

I would really appreciate your answers, my family and I live in a very secluded area, and getting the answers for my paper is very difficult. Thank you very much in advance for your answers!!What brand of Dog Shampoo do you buy?
I have several dogs with VERY long hair

I used to use Mr Australia, but recently switched to Fructis, as the former is hard to find.

I learned that human shampoo is fine, and Fructis makes them easier to brush, and shiny.

I buy it at the drug store,as it is close to home.

I loved the results

I will certainly buy it again, as it did such a nice job, and for a reasonable price.

Spouse, and several dogs.

NOTE:

This is a quote from Mike Richards, DVM%26gt;

I saw a study once, which I couldn't find to supply the reference for,

which was a review of the ingredients of various pet and people shampoos,

as well as a test of factors like pH and eye irritation. In the study, the

authors could find no significant differences between pet shampoos and

people shampoos. So I tell my clients to use whatever they like, or have on

hand.

I am sure that some shampoos work better on any particular dog than others

but that the brands that work well for that one dog may not be the best for

another dog. %26lt;%26lt;http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dhair.html#S鈥?/a>

I did further study and did learn that dog shampoo-vs-people shampoo is just a huge marketing hype, that we have fallen for for many years, and is making the marketers rich..It is just like listening to the dog food commercials, and excepting THEIR word for it as being the best..I have had more problems with dry skin and dandruff using ';dog shampoo'; than I have had using high- quality ';people'; shampoo..And I have and bathe a LOT of big hairy dogs that are sensitive to chemicals. What brand of Dog Shampoo do you buy?
1. It is healthier for a dog to be clean.

2. Overpriced pet store brands, old product grocery store brands, or online brands. I picked online.

3. I had gotten a sample of this product with a previous order. It worked well.

4. I picked a brand from a website (PetNutritionProducts.com). Great price, awesome product, inexpensive shipping, fast shipping, and excellent customer service.

5. Very satisfied. This shampoo works great.

6. Yes because it is the best dog shampoo I have ever used. This company also has an online vet to consult if you ever have questions. This is the best company I have ever delt with.

7. I have a two adult family with one precious pooch.
1) Why did you need to buy dog shampoo? Cuz I'm a groomer :)

2) What were your choices? Hundreds of shampoos out there. Too many to list brands. I use Espree, Les Poochs, and Groomers Edge Grimenator

3) Why did you choose to buy the brand that you did? I like how it cleans, smells and dilutes.

4) Where did you choose to buy your shampoo? Why? Straight from the manufacturer. It's easier and cheaper, plus I can get deals if I buy in quantities.

5)How did you feel about your purchase after you bought it? Good

6) Would you buy it again? Why or why not? Yes..like I said, I like the results I get.

7) Do you have a family or just you and your dog? (This question is to see if people make different decisions based on family size) Family of 4, 3 dogs, 2 ferrets, 1 cat, 2 lizards and a bird.

p.s. Hartz is the worst product out there.
Groomers edge.. because it cleans well, makes their coats shine, is easy on the skin (non drying) and smells wonderful.

it is also concentrated 32 to 1 so it goes A LONG way!
1) It's called Tropiclean. I like the Papaya scented one.

2) Earthbath (I'm trying that next). I was at a holistic pet store, so that's all the choices.

3) It was cheaper than Earthbath, and I liked how it smelled.

4) I was at a holistic pet store called ';Animal Nutrition Center'; in Roseville California. I was there getting all natural, high quality dog food. (Wellness)

5) It's dog shampoo, not anything essential to survival. I like it just fine. The dog hates her bath, so she hates it.

6) Yes. It keeps the dog smelling nice and her coat shiny.

7) Yes, it's just me and Dott (my dog). I know for sure that if I had kids, I wouldn't spend so much on shampoo for her.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the project.

good luck with your paper
1- because I have an indoor dog and he needs to be clean

2-Hartz-Mountain dog shampoo is all I remember

3-I bought Johnson's Baby Shampoo because even tho it is not made for dogs it is tear free, and my dog is a poodle. They get tear stains that need to be washed. I don't want to get other soaps because they might burn his eyes.

4-Walmart. It is one of the few choices to shop at where I live, and I was buying groceries as well.

5-good, I like the result and the smell

6-yes, it cleans my dog well with no tears and pleasant smell of baby scent

7-my husband and I, one dog, 3 cats

What's the difference between dog shampoo and people shampoo?!?

don't they test normal shampoo on them anyways? What's the difference between dog shampoo and people shampoo?!?
Many dog shampoos also have a flea killer in them also. And the pH of a dogs skin is slightly different than ours. This is important because a dog's skin can be ';cleaned'; too good and if all the oils are removed it can result in the dog having very itchy skin.

Can we use dog shampoo for humans?

What makes dog shampoo so different from human shampoo?

What would happen if we used it on a human? Can we use dog shampoo for humans?
yes you can. There is not much difference. Usually fragrance is the biggest change. Can we use dog shampoo for humans?
Off-course you can apply but before doing that please take permission from your dog whether he let you use that.
You CAN, but there's no real reason I could see to want to use dog shampoo over normal shampoo. Except for flea protection, I suppose.
EW.
I took a shower at my sister's house one time and used the dog shampoo by mistake. All it did was that I smelled like the dog and I didn't have flees for a few days .... LOL
If you look at the ingredients in your shampoo and the dogs... you will find them pretty much, if not all, the same.... you will just smell funny because of the stuff put in dog shampoos to get rid of doggy odder stinks. :o) You may want to try the flea and tick shampoo if you need it... lol!
People use horse shampoo (Mane N Tail)...so I don't see what the big deal is about using dog shampoo. I've use Mane N Tail in the past..never thought about using dog shampoo...but go for it...it wouldn't harm you in any way...
I don't see why not...

but why would you..

could you not just buy human shampoo...

unless you're too poor to afford normal shampoo

Dont have dog shampoo, what about organic oils shampoo?

italian grey hound. I have this pure-castile soap and its made by all organic material.Dont have dog shampoo, what about organic oils shampoo?
if you use a very mild shampoo, it should be fine. just don't make a habit of it. it;s important to use a good dog shampoo so that you don't dry out your dog's skin and cause it to itch.

Go to the expert...your vet. He/she will recommend something that you can be sure you'll feel safe using.

    Peace~~~

Could anyone recommend a good dry dog shampoo, something under $10 that I could find at a store like Walmart?

I don't like to spend a fortune on anything until I try it, winter is coming %26amp; our dog of 50 lbs. detests the bathtub (we adopted her or this wouldn't be an issue). I bathe her outside on the deck with jugs of warm water, obviously I don't want her to get sick %26amp; only do this in the warm weather.

Last winter I could only bathe her a couple times %26amp; this isn't enough.Could anyone recommend a good dry dog shampoo, something under $10 that I could find at a store like Walmart?
I use Colgate Men's Shaving Foam..just the old fashioned original one..Come is a few different fragrances, and does a great job, unless your dogs hair is extremely long..

Just rub the foam into his coat, and wipe it well with a towel..dries quickly, leaves coat soft and sweet smelling, and dogs don't seem to mind it..The emollients are actually good for the skin and coat.Could anyone recommend a good dry dog shampoo, something under $10 that I could find at a store like Walmart?
Joy dish soap works wonders also for fleas.
i know this is going to sound weird but you could use oatmeal and but it on her than brush it out it would take the drit out of her coat.or cornstrach
Petsmart and Petco sell a dry shampoo called Miracle Coat. Its in a black bottle with a pink kangaroo on it. Its ok to use. I've used their dry shampoo for cats.

I doubt Walmart sells it. They may have a dry shampoo, but it is probably a Hartz product...DONT use that junk on your dog!
I use regular head %26amp;shoulders people shampoo....fleas hate it!

A Good Dog Shampoo for a Yorkie?

Hi. I was wondering if anyone knows a good brand of dog shampoo out there for a Yorkie? The shampoo needs to have a long lasting scent. My Yorkie lives outside because of his terrible smell. I use Groomax shampoo on him twice a week, but the scent goes away after an hour and he starts to smell again. I have to shower for him twice a week because the smell is horrible but it doesn't seem to do any good. The only time he's ever smelled good is after he came back from the groomers and he smelled so good we didn't have to shower for him for a month. After showering for him twice a week for a couple of weeks, his skin is drying out and getting itchy. So, I shower for him once a week now and spray like doggy spray on him and the spray isn't working on him either it lasts only like 2 hours and goes away. Would anyone like to recommend a good smelling shampoo? And should I use an oatmeal shampoo or itch relief type?A Good Dog Shampoo for a Yorkie?
stop bathing him so much!! You are drying his skin out. He should only need bathed once or twice a month.

Try brushing him daily. Use some leave in conditioner on his skin to help restore moisture to his skin and coat.

Doggy odors can be associated with skin infections, ear infections, dental problems, and poor diet.

I dont think its a skin thing.. his skin is dry and itchy now because you are bathing too much.

Check inside his ears, are they expecially smelly? Sore to the touch? Red, crusty, black or dark brown dirt? He needs to see a vet for antibiotics.

What are you feeding the dog? Poor diet will cause doggy odors.A Good Dog Shampoo for a Yorkie?
i have a Yorkie and i use Dawn dish-washing liquid on her! Go out to Petsmart and buy dog perfume/colonge it works good on isabella!
Tough question. I have two Yorkies aged 14 and 7. I am always in search for the perfect shampoo. I use Aussie Shampoo and Conditioner (for people) on them and it usually makes them smell pretty good. May I ask why your Yorkie lives outside? Yorkies are notorious for their ';scent.'; It's just something you have to accept. Also, you should not bathe him more than once a week. I bathe my Yorkies once or twice a month. I've used the oatmeal shampoos and the itch relief shampoos and they never work. He might just have skin allergies. Maybe you should take him to the vet just to make sure instead of spending a ton of money on special shampoos and stuff. Good Luck.
Yorkie should not smell horrible. And you should not keep Yorkie outdoor, they are indoor pets.

If your Yorkie smell, find out where the smell come from. Most of time is from the ears, because of ears infection.

But anyway, I use Buddy wash, Buddy Rinse on my Yorkie. And use Buddy splash when I brush her.
try bathing him once a month and using a little baby powder or dog scent pray you can get at a petstore. No way should any dog be bathed twice a week.
What have you been doing to that dog so that it smells horrible. Use Pantene!!!

Can you use dog flea shampoo on a person?

Because are dog got fleas and both me and my mom got bit on our bodies and heads. Can you use dog flea shampoo on a person?
if you have lice get special shampoo but just for two extra dollars you can go to target and get shampoo...Can you use dog flea shampoo on a person?
Bug bomb your house (w/o the dog in it!).

Flea shampoo only kills live fleas, so unless they are crawling around on your head it would be pointless.
Would Dog Shampoo especially for Fleas be harsher that just normal shampoo for humans... check this out.....so you have to consider it.. all the best ....mark

Canine Flea Shampoo - Most shampoo products contain dog flea medicine that helps to kill fleas on your dog. The problem is that they do not prevent the fleas from coming back after the bath. Also is you don't bathe the dog correctly, the fleas will jump from the part you are washing to other parts of the dog. To avoid this problem, soap your dog from the head going back. Use a flea comb through the hair, frequently dunking the comb under water to kill the fleas as you go. Once the foam is all over your dog, let it soak in for approximately 15 minutes before washing your pet off.
    Yes, it's fine.
They bite you, but they do not stay on you.

I don't think it's a good idea to use the same shampoo.

I do think that you should clean your house/apartment very thoroughly and wash blankets etc where your dog have been sleeping. Spray your carpets, couch and such with anti flea spray.

And just use your regular shampoo. Dog fleas can not survive on humans.
Go ahead and try it....let us know how it goes.
No hun you need to clean your house and treat the yard, house, dog's bedding and dog all at the same time to get rid of the fleas! DO NOT use that shampoo on yourself, I broke out all over, taking a shower after treating a dog of mine and just had residue shampoo on my hands!
It depends on what kind, but you can probably use it on your head.

Where Can I Find Some Cheap Dog Shampoo For Itchy and Dry Skin?

I need to know where I can get some very cheap dog shampoo for dry or itchy Skin and no Dont say that i need to quit washing my dog thats not the problem. my question was where can i find some cheap shampoo .please dont get off the topic please and thankyuh(;Where Can I Find Some Cheap Dog Shampoo For Itchy and Dry Skin?
Well, the answer is not going to change just because you posted the question again. The dog's skin is dry and itchy because you are bathing him with cheap shampoo three times a week! Go to your local pet store and ask someone what they recommend, then choose whatever you can afford. Maybe if you bathe him less, you can afford a better quality shampoo since you'll use so much less of it.Where Can I Find Some Cheap Dog Shampoo For Itchy and Dry Skin?
When your dog has itchy skin, it's better to go with a good quality shampoo. I don't know what price range you are looking for, but the good thing is even though the good shampoos may cost a little more, you don't need to use much, so a bottle will last. The cheap brands may not help and you'd end up spending more by trying different cheap brands. One good brand that you can find at most vets office, is Malasab shampoo. There is a very good brand, that is organic, it's called Thera-Neem shampoo. I have a dog with skin problems and this shampoo cleared it up. It contains Neem oil which helps get rid of any red and dry skin areas. You can find it online at neemdirect.com, and other places. You don't need much at all, so a small bottle will last a while. It works great. Best of luck to your dog. Hope I helped.
Buddy Wash is one of the best shampoos I've ever used for my dogs. Unlike many shampoos, it doesn't leave them dandruffy in winter. I would recommend using it with Buddy Rinse Conditioner though.

    http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.a鈥?/a>

is a good site to buy it from, it's like 8 dollars a bottle. The shampoo is also a bit concentrated, I find with my dogs, I can get like 12 to 15 baths out of it and my dogs are 50 lbs each with medium length hair and some undercoat.
oatmeal based helps, can be found at any animal store. Also I feed my dogs omega fatty acids and some flax seed oil in there food as well as vit e. These all help a dry coat. good dog food helps.Never give a dog eggs that depletes oils from their coats it is a wise tale, that is not wise..

The flax seed oil I just give 1/4 tsp 3 times a week but talk to a vet before giving anything that is for people.

ADD: I just read you are bathing your dog three times a week? Please tell me that is not true you will harm your dog and it is just not the way to go..brushing the dog will help with natural oils and keep any smell down as will high quality foods.
There are many places to by cheap shampoo ..

But I will take a guess and say WALMART..

However..there are many cheap and costly shampoos that just do not work..

    Try this..just a suggestion..

Rinse your dog in apple cider vinegar mix with water let it sit on him for about 3 min...than wash in baby shampoo..

See if that works for you..if it does that is really cheap

    Good luck
petsmart petco or you can try online at smartpak.com

    http://www.smartpakcanine.com/productcla鈥?/a>
Cheap soap is just that, CHEAP, Most of them don't work worth beans. You need to see your vet and get the proper shampoo.
baby shampoo; if it's good enough for infants and wont' dry out baby skin, it's good for your dog.
You should have more care for your pet(s) how about you just get a reccomended shampoo from your local vet

Why do you have to use dog shampoo?

does it hurt to use regular shampoo with conditioner on a dog?Why do you have to use dog shampoo?
Their skin has a different pH than ours, so they can get itchy with people shampoo. Why do you have to use dog shampoo?
PH measurement can vary by sex, breed, coat color, anatomic site, general skin physiology, environmental climate, or geographical location. Canine skin is more alkaline than human skin, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.2 with some dogs have even higher pH levels on the dorsal thoracolumbar, ranging from 6.4 to 9.1

The relative alkalinity of canine skin may be partly responsible for a higher predisposition to cutaneous infections in the dog compared to other species, such as cats or humans. Human skin has an optimal pH balance of 5.4 -5.6 and the shampoos we use are designed to maintain that balance. By altering the Ph balance in using a human shampoo, one could actually cause a dog to have skin problems or worsen existing ones.
Unfortunately dog hair and skin is a different make up from humans. Just as people have different hair structures and textures, so do dogs. Shampoos made for humans will not only dry and irritate their skin, it will dry their coat. This will make them more susceptible to skin infections from scratching and the coat will not protect as well as designed.

If push comes to shove and there is no dog shampoo available, give them a good washing without any soap. This will allow the oil to remain in the coat and skin while removing most of the dirt. May need to rinse a few times more :)
human shampoo is PH balanced for human skin.. you may cause skin irritations or reactions if you use human shampoo.

My mom actually knows someone who used human shampoo on a dog and the poor dog had such bad chemical burns that it had to be put to sleep. I was young when this happened, and I thought they had used something like Pert or Head and Shoulders.. but mom told me the other day it was actually BABY SHAMPOO!
Fact is, I use human shampoo most of the time, because I think it does a better job. And conditioner too, sometimes.

Not everybody agrees, though; I know that. If it causes any ill effects, of course, stop it.
I don't think I have ever bought a bottle of dog shampoo, and I have had dogs for about 60 years. Be amazed what some water and a good brush can do.

Soap of any kind messes with the natural oils in a dogs coat.
Yes it does, its very harsh on their skin and will cause skin problems. Every now and there if you don't have dog shampoo it won't hurt but if you use it all the time it will.
regular shampoo on a regular basis will damage the coat %26amp; skin. In a pinch it's fine. I often use baby shampoo, though, since it's much gentler and milder so it won't damage the coat %26amp; skin. And it smells great!
Because human shampoo and conditioner is too harsh on a dogs skin and dries out all the oils in the skin and irritates the skin more. Stick to dog shampoo!
human shampoo has chemicals that rids the nessassary oils on the dogs skin....that human try to get rid of on their hair...how ever i do use baby shampoo on my chi from time to time
It's specially formulated for their skin needs. My dog would itch to death if I used my shampoo on her. Plus, dog shampoo rinses out much easier.
Use a good Dog Shampoo. But it's a known fact that Baby Shampoo is fine too use on a puppy or dog.
The chemicals in human shampoo are to harsh for a dogs skin.
human soaps are harsher than dog shampoo

just buy the dog-dog shampoo....get your knickers out of a bunch! xxx
Well look at me.....of course I use dog shampoo.
Yeah I think what Betty said.....is true

  • What is the best shampoo for dog dandraff?

My dog has alot of dandruff. He is part lab/part great dane. How can I cut down on this plus shedding? What is the best shampoo for dog dandraff?
There are a few things you can do. 1. Switch his food to a lamb and rice formula. That promotes a healthy skin and coat from the inside out. 2. For a limited time, till the shedding and dry skin is better purchase a product called linetone. It's an oil you put on their food that helps balance the chemicals in the body, you can also try olive oil or fish oil.

    3. Use a shampoo called Tegrin. It's an actual dandruff shampoo my vet recommended for my Golden who has bad skin allergies. Don't use head and shoulders, its not the same....it's actually called Tegrin.

    4. Once the shedding and dandruff have stopped to maintain a healthy skin and coat, continue to feed the lamb and rice formula. And bath your pup once a month w/ an oatmeal shampoo. It's very moisturizing and healthy. If symptoms return switch back to Tegrin.

Although your dog has short hair, talk to a groomer about the best brush to use. Brushing your dog 1-2 times a day helps to promote the natural oils in his skin to cut down on dry skin and shedding.

Good LuckWhat is the best shampoo for dog dandraff?
If the dandruff is bad a vet can perscribe a natural oatmeal bath that is better then what they have at the stores. I did this for my dog... however it's going to run you around $11 per bottle.
Try Tea Tree Oil, Salicylic Acid, Benzoil Peroxide, or Coal Tar.

Tea Tree Oil and Coal Tar can be found at any petstore, you may need to order online through a kennel supplier like Pet Edge (www.petedge.com) to get the other two. A lot of people will suggest oatmeal, but that really doesn't help with bad dandruff, oatmeal is mostly soothing against itchiness caused by mild dry skin and/or allergies. A good moisturizing conditioner after the shampoo will help also.

If the dog has dry skin and shedding, you may also look at food as being the culprit; poor quality food = poor coat and skin. Good foods: Artemis, Wellness, Innova Evo (the best by far), Orijen, Canidae, Chicken Soup, Solid Gold. BAD foods: Pedigree, Purina, Beneful, Pro Plan, Alpo, Science Diet, anything from a grocery store or Petsmart type store.

Lastly, you can find food additives for skin and coat (Lipiderm is the brand I use) but there are many others, they all contain fish oils and fatty acids to help reduce shedding and dry skin. However, I suggest you use these in combination with a good food, not to replace a good food.

What dog shampoo will reduce dog dander?

mum has allergies to the dog and i need a shampoo or wipes or spray to reduce dog dander! What dog shampoo will reduce dog dander?
Don't use flea and tick shampoo when your dog does not have flea and ticks.

A better way to manage allergy is to keep dog away from bedrooms and change all carpet flooring into hardwood. What dog shampoo will reduce dog dander?
Shampooing your dog doesn't actually reduce dander. Dander is just dead skin cells shedding from your dog. Shampooing helps to manage dander, because you are rinsing a lot of it down the drain, instead of letting it get into the air in your home.
There are special shampoos that are supposed to dander like Allergan you can try.

P.S. do not use people soap or shampoo or dish soap- dogs have a unique pH and these will dry his skin out to the point of being painful. What brand dog shampoo for eliminate body odor is worked better?
You should find out why the body odor is present. You really shouldn't be able to smell a healthy dog.

I have heard that if humans wash their hair with dog shampoo that the color in your hair will come out...does anyone know if this is true? and im assuming it doesnt work on bleached hair...Does dog shampoo take out human hair color?
No, it doesn't. I used to work in a kennel with grooming, and the caretaker who lived there used dog shampoo more often than not, and her hair looked fine.Does dog shampoo take out human hair color?

homemade anti flea dog shampoo for our dog....PLS. HELP US!How can you make a homemade anti-flea dog shampoo?
Any shampoo will kill fleas if lefton long enough. It dissolves the fleas exoskeleton, killing it. Leave it on for at least 5 minutes. Also, you can add some juice from the peel of an orange to the shampoo to help kill the fleas faster. How can you make a homemade anti-flea dog shampoo?
Actually, any shampoo will kill fleas......they'll drown. But any flea shampoo won't keep other fleas from jumping on your dog when the bath is finished. What you need is something that can work for extended periods of time...something with a residual effect. For example...there are dips, medicines you can apply directly to the skin, on the neck..ect. A flea only spends it's time on a dog just long enough to eat, then it jumps off. To in order to control the fleas at your house, you'll need to treat the dog...as I described above, the house and your yard. Only then will you have a handle on the fleas. Fleas breed very rapidly (an adult female has the potential to lay over 250,000 eggs in a month), so you may have to chance your insecticides or medicines for your dog on a regular basis. That way the fleas don't become resistant to the same medicines. Best of luck to you.
Get some Neem oil. Add 2 tablespoons into 17 ounces of your regular dog shampoo. It will repel the fleas. Or just go to Petsmart and get some De Flea shampoo. it will kill the fleas on contact. www.naturalchemistry.com is the website for the De Flea products.
Hey the best thing in the world that is safe for you and your pet is go and get you some listerene mouth wash put in a spray bottle and spray pet area....safe to spray in doghouse too...(safe for carpet but test in safe area before spraying completly on carpet) there should be NO problem...kills misquitoes and other insects...safe for you and me!!!
Eucalyptus, Garlic, there are a number of herbs that are suppose to keep fleas off dogs. Try an herbal remedy book. Check out what the library has.
Add tea tree oil to shampoo and let it sit... why homemade?

What is a natural ingredient that I can add to my dog shampoo recipe that will whiten the coat of my Malteese?

    Hi,

Thanks in advance for the help! I have a doggy shampoo recipe that I love. I would like to find a natural ingredient to add to it that will brighten up the coat of my white Malteese. Does anyone know what I could use?

  • What dog shampoo would you recommend for his coat.?

I use a regular dog shampoo but i want something that can make his coat healthier.

My dog is a shih tzu and i want to maintain his coat healthy and with no nots.

thanks in advanceWhat dog shampoo would you recommend for his coat.?
A shampoo isn't going to make your dog's coat healthy or mat free. Healthy coat is from feeding quality food %26amp; add fish oil capsules %26amp; from regular brushing to keep hair mat free %26amp; spread coat oils thru the hair. On a shih-tzu I would use only a hypo shampoo %26amp; no conditioner - it isn't needed %26amp; can make blackheads %26amp; change coat natural ph.What dog shampoo would you recommend for his coat.?
If he's partially white, get a shampoo at petsmart or petco for dogs with white hair. Also, get a conditioner. I have a poodle mix with really fine hair that mats and knots easily so I use a pantene deep conditioner on him. Its not made for dogs, but I use it anyway :]
The biggest factor in a healthy coat is diet. High quality food and supplements will result in a healthier coat.

Using conditioner can help with tangles, but you need to brush and comb him often.

Where can i find some cheap dog/puppy shampoo for dry or itchy skin>>details<<?

So i have a shitzu and we wash him at least 3 times a week cause he gets so dirty hes almost 5 months old and we need some shampoo for him so he wont scratch his fur from being dried out. So Any Cheap Shampoo anyone that actually works?Where can i find some cheap dog/puppy shampoo for dry or itchy skin%26gt;%26gt;details%26lt;%26lt;?
I bathe my dog three times a week because she has allergies and the vet asked us to bathe her. We use a medicated shampoo that you don't have to get with a prescription. It's called Douxo Seborrhea Medicated dog shampoo. That shampoo works wonders. My dog's skin is perfectly hydrated and her fur is so soft. Remember, this stuff is medicated to stop the itching from dried skin, and full of emolients.

When I used cheap shampoos, I found on Y/A that you could use Aveeno Bath Oil (in the dark, dark navy blue bottle). Apply the bath oil, rub it into the skin. Rinse off 75% of it.

It sorta worked, but she had the allergies, so it wasn't perfect. Plus it's expensive. When you add the cost of Aveeno to buying the shampoo, you're better off buying the Douxo. I buy the Duoxo shampoo because she's worth it. I don't want her to suffer. Price shop online. Here it is at Amazon:

Shampoo is not going to fix your dog's dry itchy skin.

He has that for several reasons, chief of which is the fact that you shampoo him WAY, WAY TOO OFTEN.

Once or twice a month is all you should ever wash a dog, you are literally stripping all the oil from his skin and fur - that's why he is so dry. Stop it before the poor guy flakes and scratches himself to death, 3 times a week is downright animal abuse.

Where did you ever think you could do this? He's a living being, not a shirt.

The other important thing is to feed him good dry kibble like Canidae. 2 of my dogs have dry skin and since I started feeding Canida Chicken and Rice, which is geared towards skin good health, they look great and have no more skin problems. Supermarket junk is mostly corn meal (read the ingredients), that's cattle feed, not nutrition for dogs.

Quit washing your dog so much - and when you do, use something good, not something cheap., HyLite is very good, used by a lot of show people and trainers, it leaves a dog's coat very clean but is not detergent based so doesn't strip the oil.

Again - stop washing that dog to death.
I would agree with the other answerers-3 times a week is alot to wash a dog, try brushing him through really well instead-this should get alot of the dirt out. I have a Lhasa Apso, which is similar to a Shih Tzu and I always use Johnson's Baby Shampoo on him or Boots Tea Tree Shampoo (and conditioner if his coat has dried out). I have never had any problems with them, the breeder told us to use the baby shampoo when he was a puppy and we just carried on. From experience, I have found that dog shampoos dry out the coat and the skin and are expensive so I hope this helps.
3 times a week is way too much to be washing any dog, 3 times a month is more acceptable but still a little too much. Try like every two weeks if you can. And also, try an oatmeal shampoo, my dog has sensitive skin and I wash him with this and he is fine. But I don't think the shampoo is the problem... it's the amount of baths the dog is getting. If he is dirty but just had a bath recently, try just wiping him off with a wet cloth or something.
I groom yorkies that go outside, play in the snow and whatever eles is out there. We bath them once a week! That's it. If he's that dirty then maybe just a dry bath towels. Wipe him down once in a while and brush him. For dry and itchy skin try a skin and coat supplement. Grizzly Salmon Oil or California Natural Skin and Coat. It works awsome. Also a food that has Omega 3 and 6. Herring and Sweet Potato. California Natural makes it and Wellness. Canidea is a good one too. Chicken Soup for Dogs. Good luck!
His skin is dry and itchy because you are bathing him too much, and worse yet, using some cheap shampoo!

Dogs should not be bathed more than twice a month from what I've been reading. Check with your vet to make sure you're not irritating his skin with the shampoo you are using, and definitely stop bathing him so much.
It is very bad for a dogs skin to be bathed more than once a month. It causes their skin to crack, flake, and get very irritated. I wouldnt bathe him for about a month, it should clear up. If not, get some good conditioning puppy shampoo, you are going to have to spend some extra money. You get what you pay for. Good luck!
Well like the other person said, your washing your poor dog way to much. That is why your dog has dry skin. Cut down on the baths. I'm not a dog bathing expert, but I would try bathing your dog once every two weeks or three weeks, but i'm not sure. Good luck!
he is itchy because his skin isn't made for such washing. Try Dawn Dish Soap, my vet told me to try it, it also kills fleas and its cheap. Good luck
its not good for your dog to be washed 3 times a week. try removing him from the dirty environment instead. your poor dog is being tortured with dry skin :(
Washing him to much is what is not working. It is drying him out. Only wash him once every one to three months.

Can I use dog shampoo in my hair?

I ran out of my normal shampoo and my mom forgot to get me some! Is it okay if i use my dogs shampoo? Im not talking about his flea and tick stuff but the stuff we use for just his baths. Its for like dogs with white coats or whatever.

Is it okay to use dog shampoo?? And will it turn my hair any weird color? Can I use dog shampoo in my hair?
I used a dog flea shampoo once (long story!) and my hair was just fine.

Now yours, which is for white coats, may have a tiny amount of ';blue'; in it, this makes the white look whiter. So if you have bleached blond hair it may change the colour but otherwise it should be fine. Can I use dog shampoo in my hair?
Yes, you can use dog shampoo. If it's chemically formulated to kill fleas though it might irritate your skin or give you a rash. If it's regular dog shampoo then it will be fine.

    Rinse, lather %26amp; repeat! :)
Do not use it more than one week at a time. The shampoo manufactures need your business.

It you start to growl , more than normal, or find yourself licking to clean yourself DISCONTINUE USE AND SEE YOUR VET.
Yes you can, I have years and years ago my hair really shone..It was a soap bar. ';Timid Joe dog soap'; had a smell like anti dandruff shampoo.
I think it should be fine, for as long as it's not a medicated shampoo like the ones for fleas or something.

    http://dogtime.com/shampoo.html
no its fine, LOL it has less chemicals than our shampoo does, its fine and no your hair wont turn a weird colour! LOL
I use dog shampoo, its better for your hair, or at least mine. lol.
ya its not going to hurt you just dont get it in your eyes and make sure you rinse very well
Yeah,I've used it and it made my hair extra - soft!

What kind of dog shampoo or flea colar kills fleas?

Well, from my experience, neither of these worked well for me. I reccomend a flea dip from a local animal shelter, or your vet. I use a product called Frontline, and it is working VERY well for me. Give it a try! :)

Like I said, you can usually get this product at your local animal shelter, or your vet. Good luck! What kind of dog shampoo or flea colar kills fleas?
shampoing the fleas will just kill an adult on the dog only for the others to hop on later..you must get a monthly spot on like frontline plus you will need to kill the fleas, eggs and larve living in your home remember as soon as you see one flea on your pet in the home your already infested, you need to get some spray to treat your home from the vet or flea bombs and a bloody good hoover.my vet said the best place for flea collers is in the hoover bag!

even my chemist is selling frontline now..im afraid its the only way to keep on top of what can be a terrible infestation problem, not good for you and not good for dog.

remember to wash everything too. What kind of dog shampoo or flea colar kills fleas?
Don't buy anything off a supermarket shelf. Go to the vets and ask them. It is a bit expensive but worth it. Then treat your dog with Frontline which will kill fleas for 6 - 8 weeks. You have to keep on top of it which seems expensive at the time but is cheaper than taking your dog to the vets with infected bites.
As i know there are no shampoo's which actually kill flea's. As for collars most will kill them to a certain extent but not the full lifecycle of the flea. You'd do better with a spot on treatment try:

    - Frontline

    - Advocate

    - Stronghold

If these are availiable in the US?
Shampoo's and collar's dont work, you need to go the vets and get the real stuff

Can I wash my puppy with any shampoo or do I have to use a special dog shampoo?

Yes you can, but ensure it is a mild shampoo and not medicated. Again wath the eys. Baby shampoo works great. Can I wash my puppy with any shampoo or do I have to use a special dog shampoo?
Human shampoo will give her itchy skin. You definitely need to be using dog shampoo, or at the very least mild baby shampoo, on any puppy or dog. And be sure not to bathe her too often or unnecessarily, because this can also cause dry, itchy skin. Despite what many people will tell you, dogs do not need regular baths every few weeks to stay healthy and clean, and bathing too often can sometimes do more harm than good.

Also be sure to rinse carefully and thoroughly and not leave any shampoo residue. Can I wash my puppy with any shampoo or do I have to use a special dog shampoo?
Dogs in general should be washed with dog shampoo, but my vet said that I didn't need a special puppy shampoo when I got my puppy, that like an oatmeal dog shampoo would be fine. Humans skin and hair has different needs that dog skin and fur, so while using a plain human shampoo on your dog once shouldn't hurt it, it's nor formulated to meet the requirements of your dogs skin and coat, possibly striping it of too much oil, leaving it dry and brittle. A lot of dogs coat need more oil than our hair because the oil helps repel water to keep their skin from getting wet when they are outside in the rain or snow, which keeps them warmer.

Becareful of some flea shampoos, going on what our groomer said (and yes you could take this with a bit of salt, because it could be self serving on her part) a lot of flea shampoos and dips have medicine in them that goes into your dogs bloodstream. With that being said, I will fully admit that I have no vet expertise, but it would be a good question to ask your vet about if you're considering a flea shampoo or dip (BTY - this was her reasoning for why they don't do flea dips or have flea shampoo at her doggie salon)
it's better for dog shampoo but....pretty safe for peoples shampoo.
any will work I like to use Johnson Baby Shampoo
Dogs should be washed with dog shampoo because there ph balance differs from humans. Ph balance is acidity and alkaline. Using people shampoo on a dog makes it more alkaline, so it can't fight off pathogens as well.
Definately a dog shampoo. Personally, I like to use a coconut based shampoo instead of a soap based shampoo. The coconut does better than the oatmeal in dealing with dandruff and stuff.

I personally like Buddy Wash, but Tropiclean works very well too.

I don't like most tearless puppy shampoos, cause I fine they dry out the skin. The coconut based shampoo is the only kind that won't leave my dog dandruffy in winter.
yep you can:) but i wouldnt mix shampoo's becouse it can effect the dogs skin
You need to use a dog shampoo--human shampoo won't do. Oh, using human shampoo won't kill your dog. But it's the equivalent of washing your dog in orange juice and then rinsing it off--what the heck did you just accomplish other than rinsing the dog off? The orange juice didn't provide any real benefit, it was the rinse that made the difference. When you use human shampoo on a dog, any benefit of the shampoo is more than offset by other elements and so the only real benefit is the rinse--which you can do with a hose and no shampoo!

    1. Dogs and humans require different pH levels. So human shampoo doesn't work on dogs like it does humans. Why does this ';pH thing'; matter? Because if it's too high, it strips your dog's coat of it's natural protective oils which leads to a dry skin which leads to excessive itching which can lead to infections and a very unhappy dog (plus more allergy problems--it's not the dog hair that affects most people it's the dander which is dead skin).

    2. Dog shampoo usually includes some kind of anti-tick, flea and bug repellent. It's not 100% effective but every little bit helps. Does your human shampoo advertise itself as being flea-repellent?

    3. Human shampoo typically includes various kinds of scents (even if they're subtle) so we ';smell good'; for the opposite sex. Dog shampoo typically tries to incorporate some organic scents--if the dog smells of oranges or something sweet, that attracts bugs!

    4. Tests on humans indicate that most of us prefer a shampoo that creates lots of suds (we associate that with ';it's working';). The best dog shampoo doesn't create lots of suds. That's because it makes it difficult to rinse out all of the residue.
You need to use a shampoo for puppies. Read the bottle before you buy it to make sure your pup is old enough to use it.
any shampoo will do just watch the eyes or it will give you a fit.

    watch the medicated brands.
a very mild baby shampoo, yes baby shampoo works swell, i wouldnt wash it too often tho, maybe once a month, sometimes i even use baby wipes to wipe off our minidoxie, shes a long and lean loving machine......puppy kisses to your puppy from our little lovey. HoneyBun...........ST from oHIo
Need a little more info about your pooch!
You can use a product like No More Tears (my vet says it is safe) but I find I get better results with dog products. Other then baby shampoo you want to stay away from other human products as MANY may irritate your dog, and could even be dangerous!! Better to error on the side of caution and buy a shampoo that you know is safe for dogs.

Does dog shampoo work on people?

I mean it says that dogs will have a healthy shinier coat but will it work on peoples hair?Does dog shampoo work on people?
    i'm not sure..

but people can use horse shampoo..

and dogs can use people shampoo..

60% chance that you can use dog shampoo..

do us a favor, try using dog shampoo and after a few weeks let us know what will happen..

good luck!Does dog shampoo work on people?
A dogs skin is very sensitive. This is why you must never use human shampoo or soap on a dogs coat. We wash our GS with a special dog

shampoo called ';Aloveen'; and it is wonderfull for her skin and coat. We also use it ourselves and it is great for our hair and scalp. It stops the itchies and I can recommend it.

    Wedge
Dog shampoo is for dogs and people shampoo is for people but it is your hair and if you want to take a chance on using it then that is up to you but I wouldn't do it
You may try for yourself and if u don't become bald or you don't change into a dog, then you may recommend others. Then, u should try the cat's, horse's and so on......
I wouldn't try it, dog's coats are very different to human hair, you run the risk of an allergy and a severe reaction!
IDK, why not try it and find out? I wouldn't use it, I only use products from the hair salon that my hair stylist recommends.
    ah no.

I agree with those that said PetEdge, but you could also price check with Dog's Outfitter (www.dog.com) and CherryBrook (www.cherrybrook.com). Just remember whatever you purchase through online catalogs you will have to pay shipping for. But you can also go to dog shows and/or pet expos to pick these items up or you can have someone pick these items up at a distributor if any of your groups memers live close by.
Have you tried Pet Edge(www.petedge.com). They sell grooming and other supplies at lower than retain prices. I don't have a catalog handy to see what they charge.
Forget the whole idea. Best thing is to dilute any good dog shampoo with water (1 : 5) and ad some apple cider vinegar.

BTW, don't trust anything that sounds too good of a deal.

I get Suave's oatmeal shampoo for dogs.

I could have picked flea stuff, but i decided not to.

I chose the oatmeal shampoo because my dog had dry skin and needed the nourishment.

I bought it at Target because it's cheap there.

um, ever since i bought the shampoo, it's been working good, so i'm happy with it.

yes, i would buy it again because it's been keeping my dog's skin healthy.

    Michele,

Lauramel has actually given ayo a fairly good answer by pointing you away from the Vet shampoos and towards some natural human choices.

Did you know taht the horses at the Kentucky Derby are all shampooed with chemical free human shampoo? Specifically, EcoGinesis SLS Free Baby Shampoo. No chemicals in it so it does not dry out their skin.

You may want to take a look at it. It is a little expensive and I think it is only online but the trainers and numerous other dog owners swear by it - as odd as that may seem. What's the best dog shampoo to use for my dogs?

Is there something I can use to bathe my dog other than dog shampoo?

use only dog or puppy shampoo

dogs have different PH levels than humans and their skin is different, reacts differently to different chemicals

hollyyIs there something I can use to bathe my dog other than dog shampoo?
No, dog shampoo is the safest product to use for your dog's skin/coat. Human products is made for people %26amp; dishwashing detergent is made for dishes. Either of which is formulated or correct ph for a dog skin %26amp; is too drying. Pet shampoo is easily found %26amp; inexpensive %26amp; less costly than paying a vet bill b/c you caused your dog to scratch or break out in hives.

Btw- human tearless products are not tearless on animals. Is there something I can use to bathe my dog other than dog shampoo?
i have always used baby shampoo and that way it wont hurt if it gets in there eyes

and i use regular conditioner but only on his legs and body

My dog ate dog shampoo today. What should I do? Is she poisend?

My rottweiler is 7 months old and I noticed this morning that there was a lot of slime or whatever it is called around her mouth and now I found the EMPTY bottle of dog shampoo. She is just lying around and doesn't look very good! What should I do? I have given her saltwater so she would vomit, but she didn't. The doctor is much to far away!My dog ate dog shampoo today. What should I do? Is she poisend?
Follow up with a good conditioner?

Ah, heck....she's probably gonna be fine....espcially, if it was a shampoo formulated for dogs. The manufacturers must take into consideration how dogs lick themselves all the time, and sometimes drink the water when you bathe them. I think he's gonna be fine.....just might have a touch of ';irregularity'; for a while.....My dog ate dog shampoo today. What should I do? Is she poisend?
Call the vet and read the ingredients off to him. The vet may or may not recommend inducing vomiting.
get over it Take it 2 the Vet!!!!!! GAH! its the dogs life or ur CRUELTY!! lol but take it 2 the vet SUCK IT UP! and drive gosh! NO OFFENSE TAke it 2 the vet rite away!
you better take her to the vet fast
    Call a vet.

I really doubt if your dog ATE a whole bottle of shampoo. She might have tasted it but come on.....

She probably licked some of it up but she wouldnt have ate alot of it.

I think she will be fine.
I would imagine that is has been some time since it ate it, and if it ain't dead yet, u will probably be ok, if the doctor is too far away just call, they can usually walk u through certain steps. I didn't realize salt water made u vomit. Some Cod liver oil, might, not very much though because that can be harmful too. Dogs are different than people though, let it outside to eat some grass, if it has a upset stomach or anything that will make him barf it up. My dog ate a bag of raw potatoes, it took about an hour and he throw most of it up.
Call your vet - NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would call the Vet and ask.
I think you should call a vet and your dog will not be poisoned your dog will thru-up.
i would take my dog to the vet right away cuz the vets can make them throw up to get it out of there system
A 7 month old rotty.. wow how nice puppy hood is.. we currently have an almost 3 mo old german shep so will be going thru some of the things you have experienced... WOW=eee

She will have an enema from the top down... lol.. The old saying Soap doesn't hurt...

    Ain't It Fun ???
Go to your drug store and ask for I believe peptic, in order to induce vomiting. If it was flea shampoo, get to vet fast. Will have the runs for awhile

I have used dog shampoo on my hair many times. So sure.
NO! Dog shampoo usually has a chemical that can severly injure a human.
haha, i dont see how it can hurt unless you have known allergies to certain shampoos go for it!!
I think you could cause dogs have more sensative skin then ppl
Well, why would you want to in the first place... just buy HUMAN shampoo that smells like coconut
your hair will probably be greasy and damaged.
You can always put a little bit on a small patch of hair and check for dry skin/hair falling out/yada yada.
sure if you really want to.
    Go ahead..do it.
Go for it, but if you have any irritation stop using it. There is a possibility of it leaving your hair much more greasy than your normal shampoo.
it wont hurt my little bro used it because his friend dared him to and nothing happend to him

  • Will regular dog shampoo kill fleas?

I found a couple of fleas on my dog just now, so I soaked him in regular dog shampoo for 10-15minutes. Will this stop the fleas for now since I don't have any flea shampoo at the moment? Will regular dog shampoo kill fleas?
in my cases, it depended on the type of shampoo

I have not dealt with this recently, but there are a few good ones out there.

I'll tell you though, you get what you pay for =)

So make sure to talk to en experienced vet and get a good QUALITY shampoo for your guy. Will regular dog shampoo kill fleas?
it might make them jump off.....get in your carpet.......breed........and then first thing you know.......there gos the neiborhood...lol

your dog will live till tomorrow, then get some real flea and tick shampoo or a collar.
depends on what kind you have, sometimes you get lucky and it will, but if you have a flea problem, put advantage or something like that, I use it and my dogs and they never get fleas.
most shampoo is like flea shampoo leave it on 5 minutes and it will drown the fleas

and lice shampoo will kill fleas
No it won't - but if you have dawn dish detergent that will do it.
No, it won't. And in fact, even flea shampoo does not kill fleas! It's useless stuff - it'll wash off any current ones, but the dog will just get reinfested before the day is out, because flea shampoos are not preventatives. Preventatives are essential for tackling fleas. Check out this question from the guy who used flea shampoo, case in point:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>

You need to get some proper flea treatment from a vets. Pet store flea treatments don't work - none of them. Stores aren't licensed to sell the stuff that works against fleas and is safe for dogs and cats. You need some Frontline, Revolution, Advantage or Advocate, or a capstar for temporary relief. You may find you need to treat your house too - just don't use any form of shampoo to fight fleas!!

    Chalice
no :( you should get this liquid flea killer called Advantage through your vet (can't get it anywhere else). it kills fleas within 24 hours and protects your dog from future fleas for a month, as long as you don't give your dog a bath. otherwise, it wont be as effective even though it's waterproof. it's kind of pricey (4 in a box, $60 total), but it's worth it for a happy dog :)
No way... it is kind of the same concept that people have with lice. Regular shampoo does not kill lice because the eggs have a substance around them that causes them to stick to the hair shaft and even if you wash away the adult lice...there are still plenty of eggs waiting to hatch. So you need a special sort of shampoo that will break down the ability of the egg to stay in the hair. Well, same thing for dogs and fleas. Except it is even worse because the adult fleas themselves have ways of holding on to the hair shafts, too! So it is even harder to get rid of them. I have found that the absolute best thing that worked for my dog (worked even better then ALL of the stuff that I got from the vet) are the drops that you put behind the dog's neck once every few months. I am forgetting what the name of it is...but you can find it in the pet section at Wal-Mart.
No. Even flea shampoo won't really help much. It generally just kills the adult fleas but you need to stop the lifecycle, ie: the eggs and juveniles.

A monthly spot on is the most effective in stopping the flea lifecycle. You can also use pet-safe sprays to kill the fleas in your pet's living environment.

Are animal products tested on animals? I have dog shampoo. How'd the company test it for quality? weird.?

So, cruelty is defined by testing products on animals (i'm not part of peta). It seems to usually be human products on them, like a sad monkey smoking cigarettes or a pink hippo on roller skates. But what about animal products on animals? like this dog shampoo I just bought. Or Kibble for christ sake?

Do these companies test their dog products on dogs to see if dogs like them? Are animal products tested on animals? I have dog shampoo. How'd the company test it for quality? weird.?
I use a dog shampoo tested on humans...no joke...it says it on the bottle.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h鈥?/a>Are animal products tested on animals? I have dog shampoo. How'd the company test it for quality? weird.?
Shampoos and such are usually made of ingredients that are already known to be safe (often from testing done years ago). There is little animal testing done of cosmetic products for either animals or humans anymore.

Dogs are fed dog food in what is called palatability studies - to make sure they like the food. Many of these are done in home environments nowadays, or the dogs are kept for a short time before being adopted out.

New pharmeceutical products (for both animals and humans) are still tested on animals prior to FDA approval.
They don't test them to see if they like them, they test them to see if they'll do any damage. To be perfectly frank, dog shampoos probably get rubbed in dog's eyes and fed down their throats before they can be marketed. Unfortunately, the safety of any product has to be PROVED - and any contraindications have to be discovered.

This goes for any animal or human medicine, accessory or cosmetic unless otherwise stated.

    Chalice
Yes, products are tested on animals. There humane harmless tests and there are inhumane methods.

One humane method is to simply give pet owners some food to take home and then simply have the pet owner answer questions about whether or not the pet seems to like the food and report observations about the pet's health, activity level and weight as the pet goes through their regular activities.

Cruel testing goes on when a company keeps animals locked up in cages and does ghastly experiments.

A few years ago, it was discovered that Iams was doing some very cruel and inhumane testing. For more information go to:

    http://www.iamscruelty.com/

The inhumane testing is totally unnecessary because there are ways to test the nutritional content and quality of products in a laboratory and then do voluntary palatability testing that does not involve animals spending their entire life in a miserable existence in a cage.
of course they also test to see how much exposure to chemicals they can take they even starve them and feed them insufficient diets to test the results of malnutrition at least they use to before they found the answers to these questions and before peta got ahold of them
They test them on humans first. The testing process of all the chemicals and everything to get the right formula are tested on humans. Once they are known to be safe for dogs, they will use them on the dogs.

What dog shampoo do you use?

My dog has very dry skin and I need to find a shampoo that will not make his skin worse. Any suggestions? What dog shampoo do you use?
I adopted a pit bull who had CRAZY dandruff. I bought Hylite shampoo from my veterinarian. It is specifically made to help dry skin. Most shampoos will dry out a dog's skin if they are given too many baths. But Hylite is made especially for dogs who have dry skin, and it will not dry out their skin if they are given many baths. I know they make a spray too, that will also help. I think you can also buy this shampoo from the pet store. And another thing that my vet recommends is Selson Blue shampoo for dandruff in humans. I have not tried it on my dog, but the Hylite did help.

Other than that, to help with dry skin you can give your dog fish oil caps. I give my dog one fish oil cap twice daily. You can get something from your vet that will also help, but that is sometimes more expensive. And a good diet can also help with skin. I got my dog from the pound, and she was eating Pedigree. I changed her over to Nutro Natural Choice lamb and rice. This food also really helps a dog's skin and coat. I hope this helps. I know these suggestions REALLY helped my dog, she does not have any more dandruff or dry skin. What dog shampoo do you use?
A good ph balanced shampoo should not irritate your dogs skin. A dogs skin is fairly acidic; just like human skin which keeps a pH of about 5.5. baby shampoo is usually good or Dove hypoallergenic body wash.

However, your dog does not need shampoo'd very frequently. About once a month is all they need or their skin will become quite itchy and irritated.
you can easily and safely use a baby shampoo. very gentle
I sell Watkins so I use their pet shampoo its all natural and it helps keeps fleas, ticks and mosquitoes away from your dog. Very gentle on their skin.
    ask a vet
well first off, the dry skin may be directly from the food you are feeding him. wheat, soy, articial preservatives, dies, flavours, and byproducts can cause dry skin. i always recomend eagle pack because of personal experiences and other peoples experiences, and the fact that it is so inexpensive, but better than the leading holistic brands like royal canin and wellness.

    SKIN ALLERGIES

    Option 1: Medications and Testing

Traditional approaches focus more on control of symptoms through use of medication. It seeks to diagnose and address the symptoms, not the root cause, which means the allergy and medication can continue indefinitely.

    Option 2: Natural-Holistic Approach

Our Holistic approach seeks to address the problem nutritionally. Addressed correctly, the allergy will usually resolve and medication can normally be discontinued. Our philosophy is to start first with a holistic, whole-health, nutritional approach to resolving the root cause of the problem. There is far more to resolving allergy and digestive problems than eliminating the offending ingredient, usually a protein source. (1)

Eagle Pack Nutritional Approach To Resolving Dermatologic Allergies—

First, be certain to rule out fleas. If the reaction is year-round, the problem is probably diet related. If the problem is during the summer ‘allergy’ months only, then pollens, etc. may be the primary cause. Sometimes airborne allergies and food related allergies enforce each other. Finding the correct diet may reduce the intensity of the allergy but will not resolve it 100 percent. It is hard to know in advance how a pet will respond to a particular diet. You should see an improvement within 60-days and the problem will often resolve 100%. If your first selection is not effective select from among the other recommendations. For dogs and cats, do NOT feed anything else during the recovery period…NO table scraps, treats, biscuits, rawhide, supplements, chewable medications (unless vital for other reasons and ask your vet if it can be delayed for 30 days), chewies, rawhide. NOTHING, until the problem is resolved.

Science suggests feeding diets with a single protein and a single carbohydrate source. Avoid beef, wheat, soy and dairy, which account for over 68% of skin allergy problems. The diet should be highly digestible and contain high vitamin and mineral levels. The following Eagle Pack diets, kibble and canned, excel in these areas:

    Dogs

Holistic Select® Anchovy, Sardine %26amp; Salmon Meal w/Oatmeal Formula

Holistic Select® Duck Meal %26amp; Oatmeal formula

Holistic Select® Lamb Meal %26amp; Rice with Oatmeal

that was quoted right from their site. if they dont sell that product in your area... id also recomend wellness.

oh and Earth Bath is a great shampoo and conditioner line. it contains no laurel sulphate which acutally dries out skin!! alot of brands have that in their, even though they say its for dry skin...its kinda an oxymoron if you ask me.
I use DrsFosters%26amp;Smiths oatmeal shampoo and conditioner on my Goldens. Their skin is very sensitive and their coats are beautiful.

Go to www.DrsFosters%26amp;Smith.com they have a wide varitey of shampoos and conditioners for any kind of skin issues.
any oatmeal shampoo would be fine, especially one without a fragrence
My dog has dry skin and allergies and Ive found using an oatmeal shampoo I get from the vets works well.
I used to have the same problem until my vet told me I was bathing my dogs too often. The dry skin comes from not letting natural oils build up in your dog's coat. If a dog is allowed to be outside at least part of the day where they can roll in the grass, get rained on etc. - it is much better than bathing them regularly. Dogs that are healthy and active really do not need to be bathed at all. Our two dogs ( who are very large) stay inside and outside both. They have no odor whatsoever because we are now letting nature take its course. Most dog skin problems come from us treating our dogs as if they are human.
There are many and you can choose . Just see the composition and buy. Try to find some good site for dog care by searching on google and yahoo

Actually, if you buy a normal shampoo, for like extremely dry hair, and mix it with the dog one, then it works amazingly. And its not to bad money wise.

    hope this helps

An oatmeal or aloe based shampoo, it will soothe the skin. Vets also have special prescription shampoos just for that sort of problem.

Can anyone recomend a dog shampoo that doesn't make them go all flaky?

Both my Bullys have got flaky skin now but my Jrt is fine I've been using Bob Martin Gentle Wash for frequent use and they are both really flaky now. Sensable answers please.

TaCan anyone recomend a dog shampoo that doesn't make them go all flaky?
ok any dog shampoo works just remember dogs are like humans we all have oil in our bodies. I have a problem giving my dogs a bath more then they need but i have to have clean dogs and i do i have 4 dachshunds. So the vet said we you take out the oil (from the bath) just remember to replace it. So i put a bit of baby oil in bath water and when all done a small amount in palm and i rub hands together and rub all over the dog. It makes their coat beautiful and shiney. Or put a few drops of veggie oil in their food. ThanksCan anyone recomend a dog shampoo that doesn't make them go all flaky?
skin disorders in dogs. One of the most common form of eczema is atopic dermatitis. The symptoms of eczema may vary from dog to dog. Common for eczema in dogs is a red itchy scalp. Another eczema symptom is a dry skin with scaly skin rashes. In other dogs small bumps occur that become moist and oozing.

It appears that the cause of eczema is an abnormal response of the dogs immune system. Eczema is not contagious. Dogs with eczema'; eczema are prone to develop yeast infections.

    Causes of eczema in dogseczema:

Industrial chemicals, detergents, fumes, paints, bleach, acidic foods, alcohol-containing skin care products and grooming fragrances

    Allergens that increase eczema:

animal or vegetable proteins from commercial dog foods (food allergy), pollens

Stress, boredom, and loneliness cause itching and eczema

    Extreme changes of the temperature:

Bringing your dog into an air-conditioned room after he was outside all day is stressful. Dogs cannot rapidly compensate this change. Better is clipping the dog down

]Eczema treatment:Boost the dogs immune system

Soak or compress the eczema area with potassium permanganate.

Add Neem leaf tea, and evening primrose oil to the dog food until the eczema disappears.

Apply Neem oil to the dogs skin after bathing to decrease the itching skin rashes.

Bathing the dog with shampoo only if realy necessary. In most cases, the eczema will disappear very soon.

You can use oilatum an emoilant wash available from your chemist or even ASDA this will stop the itching.

We also use polytar shampoo to soothe the skin and emove the particles causing the irritation.

    www.eurobichons.com
Look for a soap free dog shampoo. It won't strip the oils off the coat. Also the dog food you're feeding is just as important. If it isn't a premium brand it may be the reason for dry skin. Also don't bathe your dogs unless necessary. Frequent bathing can dry the skin.
If you don't bath them too much and they're on a really good quality food, then you need to fix the problem from the inside. Give them either vegetable oil on their food daily, or better yet, a salmon oil capsule. You'll notice a huge difference in both skin and coat within a couple of weeks.
Don't use the dog shampoos - too harsh. Baby shampoos are best. Also give them cod liver oil in food (from pet shop)
You could be bathing them too often. They should only be bathed once a month or less if possible. It can also be due to diet.. What do you feed? I would suggest Lassie natural way (found at www.lassie.com/naturalway), Natural Balance, Innova Dog, Soild Gold, Timber Wolf, Chicken Soup For the Dog lovers soul Or Diamond Naturals lamb and rice. As far as shampoo I would suggest a top quality baby shampoo with milk added or something with oat meal in it.
For just cleaning-not flea control or anything, I use Johnson's and Johnson's baby shampoo.
do not bath them more twice a month. it could be drying out the skin use a medicated shampoo if need. i use one that is called First Aid.
    oatmeal shampoo or medicated shampoo
The best thing I have found for doggy dry skin is used AFTER the bath. Start with the shampoo you or the dog likes best, yes oatmeal is usually preferable. But, immediately following the rinsing, while they are still relatively wet, take a solution of 1 part Avon Skin So Soft bath oil to 4 or 5 parts warm water. Pour over the dog slowly and rub the solution into it's fur. Yes, they'll smell like a flower (lol) but it really does work great. And, it's completely safe for dogs or cats. It's also a wonderful bug and flea / tick deterrant.

Just make sure you don't use the SSS that has sunscreen in it!

    Namaste
Use Fairy Liquid. inexpensive and leaves their skin healthy and coats shinny.
Oatmeal shampoos are best for dogs that have sensitive skin. Sometimes dogs have extreme issues and the vet can prescribe a medicated shampoo. Also, dont wash your dog more than once a week, it's bad for their skin. I usually try for 2-3weeks.
i have 3 dogs, one 9 yr old, a 2 yr old and a 5month old. i use baby shampoo on my oldest and youngest because my oldest has bad skin and the PH in dog shampoo is to high for my oldest and youngest, i suggest you use baby shampoo xx
don't overbath them and when you do bathe them RINSE RINSE RINSE ,,,,,, put the on a high qualtiy dog food ( timberwolf, Canidae etc) and brush them daily
A bunch of people will tell you it is the food that you feeding them. Mean while it is the Shampoo that you asking about. Just had to say it before hand.

Hey I use Selson Blue on my dog when he gets like that. Its the cheapest and it works. You can go crazy looking for dog shampoos that do the same. As you know its just the time of season.
I've used Oatmeal shampoo on my MinPin who has really flaky, dry skin. It worked well, seemed to be moisturizing.
Did you make sure that the shampoo was out properly,

if your other dog is fine then perhaps the two with flaky skin are allergic to the shampoo, go and ask your vets advice..
Try using johnsons baby shampoo i have used it for over 20 years on my staffy`s / great danes / bull mastiff`s / german shepherd`s and had no problem`s whatsoever !
well my dog has bad skin and i use baby shampoo

it has worked a treat for me as i used to spend that much at the vets for their drops of stuff to clear it up but only worked for a while so i was told to use baby shampoo hope that helps your dogs,

as mine is OK now x
You may not believe this but I use Dawn dish soap on our four Jack Russells. It kills fleas and won't dry out the skin. Give it a try. The safest stuff I have found yet!
Do dogs need baths? Mine only get them if they've rolled in fox poo or some other pungent smelly stuff, and they just smell like dog, which is nice, especially wet dog, one of my favourite smells. Flaky skin probably a symptom of unnecessary bathing.
oatmil its the best for skin and nice hair good luck
Neem shampoo is really good so is Shirley's stay fresh - after I've rinsed them I put a few drops of vinegar in a jug of warm water to rinse again with - leave on a few seconds then rinse off with just water, this really works and leaves the coat nice and shiny :-)
do you mean a bull terrier or a pit? if a pit then get lost you moron.
Earthbath Orange Peel soap is what I use on my JRT and Chi. The Chi tends to be really flakey, so aside from the soap/shampoo, we also add Salmon Oil to her diet to help her maintain a healthy coat.
My cocker spaniel gets human shampoo, she's got a lovely golden fluffy coat and gorgeous skin. I use timotei golden highlights on her, it works beautifully, but dunno what it would be like on your dogs. But she only gets a bath about once every 2 months.
I find Bob Martin pet products are good. But you really shouldn't bath them too often as it washes the natural oils out of the coat and dries their skin. They will also get wetter when it rains as they don't have the natural water repellant that the oils provide.

When you do bath them rinse them really well until the water runs clear and then a little more, towel dry them really really well and then leave to air dry. A hairdryer will also dry their skin. You could also check with your vet as some breeds are prone to dry skin (My friend has West Highland Terriers that get flaky skin.) He may advise on a medicated shampoo. Hope this helps.
    Milk Bath Shampoo
Oatmeal shampoo is what I use on my pug and bullmastiff
I was told that the best thing to use is baby shampoo.

Can u wash a dog with normal shampoo or do you need special dog shampoo?

no she does not have fleas, or anything like thatCan u wash a dog with normal shampoo or do you need special dog shampoo?
Dog shampoo. Never use people shampoo because their coats are much much different than our hair. Can u wash a dog with normal shampoo or do you need special dog shampoo?
It's best if your dog is bathed with a good soap dye and chemical free shampoo.

If you were in a pinch and you had to wash your dog with a people shampoo diluted it down, but as a regular dog shampoo no it's to harsh, there are some dog shampoos out there that are just as bad so look for a good dog shampoo, tropiclean is a great shampoo.
Use a good shampoo made specifically for dogs - should be non-detergent so it doesn't strip the oil from your dog's coat and dry the skin.

Human shampoo, even baby shampoo, has far too much detergent, dogs have very different needs.

Don't use anything but shampoo made for dogs.
well, normal shampoo leaves the skin itchy, it tends to dry out the skin.if you absolutly HAD to use human shampoo, use a very very mild shampoo. Baby shampoo could work since it's not as harsh. dog shampoo would be the best thing. i always liked the dog oatmeal shampoo. works great.
Do not use human shampoo; the pH is wrong and it will make him itchy.

Use a dog shampoo or, believe it or not, Murphy's Oil Soap in the original liquid formula only.

    They don't cost that much,
Special doggie shampoo, if you use our regular shampoo it can give them itchy, dry skin and also takes oils away from their coat because our shampoo is designed for our skin types and hair tupe because comparing ours to dogs skin and fur their different many ways.
you should use dog shampoo but you can use baby shampoo it need s to be very mild soap as dogs skin can get irated easily with other soaps.
You can use baby shampoo but a dog shampoo is better.
No you should use a good quality DOG shampoo. Human shampoo of any kind is not the same PH.
Dogs don't have have same pH levels as humans do.

    You should use dog shampoo.
    yes u can

Something I don't understand about oatmeal dog shampoo?

Or I suppose shampoo and soaps in general. A lot of people suggest an oatmeal based shampoo when dealing with dry skin issues.

My question is, doesn't oatmeal actually *soak up* moisture? So how does an oatmeal shampoo help with dry skin?Something I don't understand about oatmeal dog shampoo?
Oatmeal is greatly overused %26amp; over-recommended in my opinion. It does soothe but is moisturizing as well %26amp; only needed for actual dry skin or for bad reactions to other shampoos. Dogs that have allergy issues do not need oatmeal usually. Their skin needs to be clear %26amp; dry %26amp; free from irritants which oatmeal leaves a very slight residue %26amp; adds to the moisture levels. They already have moist damp raw skin from licking %26amp; chewing %26amp; using oatmeal only increasing this problem. If there is any fungus or infection, you don't use oatmeal as it adds to the issue rather than helping. When you are the person doing the actual work daily %26amp; constantly dealing with dogs %26amp; their skin problems, it becomes easier to see what really works %26amp; what does not which majority of vets do not do the hands-on work %26amp; bathing/drying themselves. It makes a big difference firsthand experience than just reading a book.Something I don't understand about oatmeal dog shampoo?
I believe oatmeal has a calming/soothing effect on the skin. So, if you take the oatmeal and then add moisturizers to the shampoo, you would get the best of both. Frankly, I think oatmeal shampoo is about as much oatmeal as strawberry candy is strawberry.

I recently learned that roibos tea is an age old cure for dry skin and eczema. I think you'd be better off making some tea and soaking it into your dogs coat. That might actually do something. :o)

Add: Animal Artwork's suggestion actually makes some sense to me. Walmart Oatmeal shampoo sounds like a joke to me. :o)
oats do but it isnt actually made with what you would consider oatmeal, it is very good for dry skin but where i work i never use it because i prefer to use an exfoliating shampoo and the a remoisturizer, it leaves the coat feeling like silk! but you cannot buy what we use in any store so if you want the best you would have to come to my salonX )
I think it's more of an ingredient that soothes itchy skin and skin that is dry tends to be itchy. I know when my son had chicken pox years ago, the pediatrician recommended that he took an oatmeal bath to help with the itchiness. I suppose the oatmeal in dog shampoo is supposed to have the same affect.
Oatmeal contains vitamins and minerals that can help heal skin. The oatmeal does retain moisture, but it keeps the moisture on the skin and hair where it is needed. It really is good for your dog and I highly recommend oatmeal dog shampoos.
    lol...dry oatmeal soaks up moisture.

Shampoo is wet and the oatmeal has already soaked up the moisture. It is a soothing agent.
Yes when you are talking to an oatmeal breakfast cerial this is true..

However oatmeal does consist of a very soothing herbal supplement when incorperated into lotions, shampoos and conditioners..

    I hope this helps.
    It soothes the itch.
i doubt there is actually oatmeal in the shampoo
i think its soothing for your skin, or at least more so than other soaps.
who knows. i guess oatmeal just sounds natural and odorless so people with dry skin can use it
    It soothes the itch.

Cheap oatmeal rinse for dogs - blenderize dry oatmeal until a flour-like consistancy. Mix 1 Tablespoon of dry oatmeal with 1 quart of hot water. Shake and let sit for 1/2 hour (or while you are washing the dog). Shake and use on dog... let sit for 2 minutes ... rinse.

Edit: The ';rinse'; can also be used in a human's bath... and works well for poison ivy, bugbites etc... add up to 1/4 cup of blenderized oatmeal to warm bathwater (hot bathwater can be counterproductive).

Just curious, I am looking for a new brand..

    Thank You.

Friends Fur-EverWhat brand of dog shampoo do you use.. or recommend. ?
I use Kenic line of shampoos mostly for my dogs %26amp; clients. Their shampoos except for the medicated ones are hypo %26amp; soap/detergent free. They have good prices %26amp; great products I have never had an issue with any of their shampoos or any other products. What brand of dog shampoo do you use.. or recommend. ?
I look at more of what the needs of the dog's skin and coat are. For my first three, we always used Hartz and Seargents, and they worked fine. My Toy Poodle has been quite interesting. Being it's winter, I was using another flea and tick shampoo(I haven't seen Hartz or Seargents sold at Petco or Petsmart), but when winter set in, I stopped with it and used some puppy shampoo she had. Well, her skin became dry, thanks to winter, so I found a shampoo with tea tree oil in it. I bathe her once a month. The tea tree oil shampoo did the trick.

Edit: Chuckles, I have used Hartz and Sergeants for about 15 years on three dogs. No one will convince me that they are horrible. All of my dogs had great coats, and good skin.

Edit again: Anyway, I don't know the name of the one I use now. I just know it's made with Tea Tree Oil for dry skin. I look more at the ingredients and what the needs of the dog are, versus brand names.
I actually use puppy shampoo. It's tearless and mild and will keep your dog from hating baths due to burning eyes. My dog sits still and loves taking a bath. The shampoo is very mild and has a slight baby scent, so it doesn't overpower the dog's very sensitive nose. Always use tear free shampoo on a dog.
I use the brand Top Paw for my pup. It works great, and I have been using this brand for a long time. It keeps my dogs smelling clean and fresh. They look so much healthier too! You can find it at Petsmart for about $5.00.

    Good luck :)
Bio Groom Apple/Oatmeal,it makes the coat and skin so nice, no itching, and no harsh soaps...and the smell is not perfume, just a slight hint of apple

C is right, Hartz and Sargents are horrible shampoos, too harsh..

    pure soaps in them
If you are trying to go ';green,'; then I use Buddy Wash, ordered from http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/productr.asp?鈥?/a> It dilutes a lot, so it is going to last me a LONG time. It is also sulfur free and is soapless. And it smells good to boot!

If you are looking for a whitening shampoo, check out Shimmer Lights from Sally beauty salon.
I use and recommend Tropiclean, just because it's soap free there are no dyes chemicals perfumes alcohol. It's all plant and flower based product. Check out www.tropiclean.net. I also love there spa line.
I use Groomer's Blend. If you Google ';Groomer's Blend'; you'll get lots of results. I couldn't find the exact website, however.
For just getting the dirt off I use Mane and Tail, but for shining the coats before the ring I use Quic Color and Crown Royale Magic Touch #3 Conditioner.
Apricot, Hartz and Sergeants are HORRIBLE!

I use OUT!, it is an organic/natural dog shampoo.
I use the paul mitchell brand of dog shampoo... I know it sounds weird but it smells really good and it makes my dogs coats very shiny and soft
HyLite, costs a little more but worth it, cleans dog without stripping oil and causing dry skin.
    I like the Tropiclean.

I use other stuff if I am showing though.
Cris Christensen and occasionally Isle of Dog
    I like Bio Groom
Oatmeal baed cause of her itch

How Do You Make Your Own Dog Shampoo?

I know you're not supposed to use human shampoo because humans have thicker, more acidic skin than dogs, and our shampoo can make them break out.

While I was searching to find out if J %26amp; J's Tears-No-More was OK, I found a great homemade doggie shampoo. The recipe is in the link. Enjoy! :)How Do You Make Your Own Dog Shampoo?
I know of no way to make dog shampoo. In a pinch, you can dilute baby shampoo so that it's half water and use that. Don't get it in your dog's eyes, though. Just about all grocery stores, feed stores, drug stores, etc. have some kind of dog shampoo for sale. If you can't get to a store, you could maybe order some online at kvpet.com, ryanspet.com or petedge.com.How Do You Make Your Own Dog Shampoo?
johnson and johnson baby shampoo works really well insted of using dog shampoo, plus it makes them smell better longer! that's what i use when i babysit my neighbor's dog and it doen't irritate thier skin either. hope that helps!
If you mean from scratch, i dont know. But you could just use human shampoo, like suave, but make sure you rinse the shampoo out completely or it will dry out there skin.
