I found a couple of fleas on my dog just now, so I soaked him in regular dog shampoo for 10-15minutes. Will this stop the fleas for now since I don't have any flea shampoo at the moment? Will regular dog shampoo kill fleas?
in my cases, it depended on the type of shampoo
I have not dealt with this recently, but there are a few good ones out there.
I'll tell you though, you get what you pay for =)
So make sure to talk to en experienced vet and get a good QUALITY shampoo for your guy. Will regular dog shampoo kill fleas?
it might make them jump off.....get in your carpet.......breed........and then first thing you know.......there gos the neiborhood...lol
your dog will live till tomorrow, then get some real flea and tick shampoo or a collar.
depends on what kind you have, sometimes you get lucky and it will, but if you have a flea problem, put advantage or something like that, I use it and my dogs and they never get fleas.
most shampoo is like flea shampoo leave it on 5 minutes and it will drown the fleas
and lice shampoo will kill fleas
No it won't - but if you have dawn dish detergent that will do it.
No, it won't. And in fact, even flea shampoo does not kill fleas! It's useless stuff - it'll wash off any current ones, but the dog will just get reinfested before the day is out, because flea shampoos are not preventatives. Preventatives are essential for tackling fleas. Check out this question from the guy who used flea shampoo, case in point:

You need to get some proper flea treatment from a vets. Pet store flea treatments don't work - none of them. Stores aren't licensed to sell the stuff that works against fleas and is safe for dogs and cats. You need some Frontline, Revolution, Advantage or Advocate, or a capstar for temporary relief. You may find you need to treat your house too - just don't use any form of shampoo to fight fleas!!
Chalice
no :( you should get this liquid flea killer called Advantage through your vet (can't get it anywhere else). it kills fleas within 24 hours and protects your dog from future fleas for a month, as long as you don't give your dog a bath. otherwise, it wont be as effective even though it's waterproof. it's kind of pricey (4 in a box, $60 total), but it's worth it for a happy dog :)
No way... it is kind of the same concept that people have with lice. Regular shampoo does not kill lice because the eggs have a substance around them that causes them to stick to the hair shaft and even if you wash away the adult lice...there are still plenty of eggs waiting to hatch. So you need a special sort of shampoo that will break down the ability of the egg to stay in the hair. Well, same thing for dogs and fleas. Except it is even worse because the adult fleas themselves have ways of holding on to the hair shafts, too! So it is even harder to get rid of them. I have found that the absolute best thing that worked for my dog (worked even better then ALL of the stuff that I got from the vet) are the drops that you put behind the dog's neck once every few months. I am forgetting what the name of it is...but you can find it in the pet section at Wal-Mart.
No. Even flea shampoo won't really help much. It generally just kills the adult fleas but you need to stop the lifecycle, ie: the eggs and juveniles.
A monthly spot on is the most effective in stopping the flea lifecycle. You can also use pet-safe sprays to kill the fleas in your pet's living environment.
