Can I wash my puppy with any shampoo or do I have to use a special dog shampoo?

Yes you can, but ensure it is a mild shampoo and not medicated. Again wath the eys. Baby shampoo works great. Can I wash my puppy with any shampoo or do I have to use a special dog shampoo?
Human shampoo will give her itchy skin. You definitely need to be using dog shampoo, or at the very least mild baby shampoo, on any puppy or dog. And be sure not to bathe her too often or unnecessarily, because this can also cause dry, itchy skin. Despite what many people will tell you, dogs do not need regular baths every few weeks to stay healthy and clean, and bathing too often can sometimes do more harm than good.

Also be sure to rinse carefully and thoroughly and not leave any shampoo residue. Can I wash my puppy with any shampoo or do I have to use a special dog shampoo?
Dogs in general should be washed with dog shampoo, but my vet said that I didn't need a special puppy shampoo when I got my puppy, that like an oatmeal dog shampoo would be fine. Humans skin and hair has different needs that dog skin and fur, so while using a plain human shampoo on your dog once shouldn't hurt it, it's nor formulated to meet the requirements of your dogs skin and coat, possibly striping it of too much oil, leaving it dry and brittle. A lot of dogs coat need more oil than our hair because the oil helps repel water to keep their skin from getting wet when they are outside in the rain or snow, which keeps them warmer.

Becareful of some flea shampoos, going on what our groomer said (and yes you could take this with a bit of salt, because it could be self serving on her part) a lot of flea shampoos and dips have medicine in them that goes into your dogs bloodstream. With that being said, I will fully admit that I have no vet expertise, but it would be a good question to ask your vet about if you're considering a flea shampoo or dip (BTY - this was her reasoning for why they don't do flea dips or have flea shampoo at her doggie salon)
it's better for dog shampoo but....pretty safe for peoples shampoo.
any will work I like to use Johnson Baby Shampoo
Dogs should be washed with dog shampoo because there ph balance differs from humans. Ph balance is acidity and alkaline. Using people shampoo on a dog makes it more alkaline, so it can't fight off pathogens as well.
Definately a dog shampoo. Personally, I like to use a coconut based shampoo instead of a soap based shampoo. The coconut does better than the oatmeal in dealing with dandruff and stuff.

I personally like Buddy Wash, but Tropiclean works very well too.

I don't like most tearless puppy shampoos, cause I fine they dry out the skin. The coconut based shampoo is the only kind that won't leave my dog dandruffy in winter.
yep you can:) but i wouldnt mix shampoo's becouse it can effect the dogs skin
You need to use a dog shampoo--human shampoo won't do. Oh, using human shampoo won't kill your dog. But it's the equivalent of washing your dog in orange juice and then rinsing it off--what the heck did you just accomplish other than rinsing the dog off? The orange juice didn't provide any real benefit, it was the rinse that made the difference. When you use human shampoo on a dog, any benefit of the shampoo is more than offset by other elements and so the only real benefit is the rinse--which you can do with a hose and no shampoo!

1. Dogs and humans require different pH levels. So human shampoo doesn't work on dogs like it does humans. Why does this ';pH thing'; matter? Because if it's too high, it strips your dog's coat of it's natural protective oils which leads to a dry skin which leads to excessive itching which can lead to infections and a very unhappy dog (plus more allergy problems--it's not the dog hair that affects most people it's the dander which is dead skin).

2. Dog shampoo usually includes some kind of anti-tick, flea and bug repellent. It's not 100% effective but every little bit helps. Does your human shampoo advertise itself as being flea-repellent?

3. Human shampoo typically includes various kinds of scents (even if they're subtle) so we ';smell good'; for the opposite sex. Dog shampoo typically tries to incorporate some organic scents--if the dog smells of oranges or something sweet, that attracts bugs!

4. Tests on humans indicate that most of us prefer a shampoo that creates lots of suds (we associate that with ';it's working';). The best dog shampoo doesn't create lots of suds. That's because it makes it difficult to rinse out all of the residue.
You need to use a shampoo for puppies. Read the bottle before you buy it to make sure your pup is old enough to use it.
any shampoo will do just watch the eyes or it will give you a fit.

watch the medicated brands.
a very mild baby shampoo, yes baby shampoo works swell, i wouldnt wash it too often tho, maybe once a month, sometimes i even use baby wipes to wipe off our minidoxie, shes a long and lean loving machine......puppy kisses to your puppy from our little lovey. HoneyBun...........ST from oHIo
Need a little more info about your pooch!
You can use a product like No More Tears (my vet says it is safe) but I find I get better results with dog products. Other then baby shampoo you want to stay away from other human products as MANY may irritate your dog, and could even be dangerous!! Better to error on the side of caution and buy a shampoo that you know is safe for dogs.
