Something I don't understand about oatmeal dog shampoo?

Or I suppose shampoo and soaps in general. A lot of people suggest an oatmeal based shampoo when dealing with dry skin issues.

My question is, doesn't oatmeal actually *soak up* moisture? So how does an oatmeal shampoo help with dry skin?Something I don't understand about oatmeal dog shampoo?
Oatmeal is greatly overused %26amp; over-recommended in my opinion. It does soothe but is moisturizing as well %26amp; only needed for actual dry skin or for bad reactions to other shampoos. Dogs that have allergy issues do not need oatmeal usually. Their skin needs to be clear %26amp; dry %26amp; free from irritants which oatmeal leaves a very slight residue %26amp; adds to the moisture levels. They already have moist damp raw skin from licking %26amp; chewing %26amp; using oatmeal only increasing this problem. If there is any fungus or infection, you don't use oatmeal as it adds to the issue rather than helping. When you are the person doing the actual work daily %26amp; constantly dealing with dogs %26amp; their skin problems, it becomes easier to see what really works %26amp; what does not which majority of vets do not do the hands-on work %26amp; bathing/drying themselves. It makes a big difference firsthand experience than just reading a book.Something I don't understand about oatmeal dog shampoo?
I believe oatmeal has a calming/soothing effect on the skin. So, if you take the oatmeal and then add moisturizers to the shampoo, you would get the best of both. Frankly, I think oatmeal shampoo is about as much oatmeal as strawberry candy is strawberry.

I recently learned that roibos tea is an age old cure for dry skin and eczema. I think you'd be better off making some tea and soaking it into your dogs coat. That might actually do something. :o)

Add: Animal Artwork's suggestion actually makes some sense to me. Walmart Oatmeal shampoo sounds like a joke to me. :o)
oats do but it isnt actually made with what you would consider oatmeal, it is very good for dry skin but where i work i never use it because i prefer to use an exfoliating shampoo and the a remoisturizer, it leaves the coat feeling like silk! but you cannot buy what we use in any store so if you want the best you would have to come to my salonX )
I think it's more of an ingredient that soothes itchy skin and skin that is dry tends to be itchy. I know when my son had chicken pox years ago, the pediatrician recommended that he took an oatmeal bath to help with the itchiness. I suppose the oatmeal in dog shampoo is supposed to have the same affect.
Oatmeal contains vitamins and minerals that can help heal skin. The oatmeal does retain moisture, but it keeps the moisture on the skin and hair where it is needed. It really is good for your dog and I highly recommend oatmeal dog shampoos.
lol...dry oatmeal soaks up moisture.

Shampoo is wet and the oatmeal has already soaked up the moisture. It is a soothing agent.
Yes when you are talking to an oatmeal breakfast cerial this is true..

However oatmeal does consist of a very soothing herbal supplement when incorperated into lotions, shampoos and conditioners..

I hope this helps.
It soothes the itch.
i doubt there is actually oatmeal in the shampoo
i think its soothing for your skin, or at least more so than other soaps.
who knows. i guess oatmeal just sounds natural and odorless so people with dry skin can use it
It soothes the itch.

Cheap oatmeal rinse for dogs - blenderize dry oatmeal until a flour-like consistancy. Mix 1 Tablespoon of dry oatmeal with 1 quart of hot water. Shake and let sit for 1/2 hour (or while you are washing the dog). Shake and use on dog... let sit for 2 minutes ... rinse.

Edit: The ';rinse'; can also be used in a human's bath... and works well for poison ivy, bugbites etc... add up to 1/4 cup of blenderized oatmeal to warm bathwater (hot bathwater can be counterproductive).
