Any home remedies or brands you suggest? He likes to swim in our pond on occassion, but the dog shampoos (various brands) I've used just don't cut it.. as soon as he dries I notice that he still smells!I have a 10 yr. old Lab mix who smells really bad. this happened with our rotti when he got older..

I found what helped was using a soft scrubbing brush making sure I got all the dead skin and hair when we shampooed him, he seemed to be fresher for longer.

we found groomers edge grimenator shampoo excellent on himI have a 10 yr. old Lab mix who smells really bad. I gave him a bath with dog shampoo but he still smells!HELP
All those other answers are correct as far as they go but no one told you to take your dog to the vet to have his anal glands checked and evacuated.. If they are blocked and oozing then he will smell really bad. You can learn to do this but it is a nasty job and I would rather pay someone else to do it..

You should also be brushing your dogs teeth. Have your vet check them too as long as you are going to be there. He may need to have them professionally cleaned and that has to be done under sedation.

Don't be too motivated with the baths. Give him a good clean water rinse when he has been in the pond but only use soap if he has been in something really smelly.. Labs have oily under coats to keep them dry when they have to go in cold water. If you are constantly using soap and breaking that oil barrier the dogs system will work twice as hard to replace the natural oils that should be there. Also make sure that his bedding and the inside of his dog house, if he has one, are really clean. I hope this helps.
I agree that high quality food is important. Also a high quality shampoo is important too. Stuff you get at Wal-Mart is NOT high quality. I agree to get something from the groomer if you don't want to get he groomed.

If you're going to use perfume on your dog please make sure it's safe for dogs. There is dog cologne and it's ingredients are different from people perfume....we don't usually lick our arms where we apply it...usually.
a lot of it comes from the food you feed.. low qulity foods witha lot of corn will lend to body odor. Also, if you let him stay damp and don't blow out hte moisture, then the smell will come back, and usually stronger than before! Try one trip to the groomer, and have him professionally bathed and dried. If this really helps, then you could be on the right track. You should still consider his diet, though.
Labs do have an oily smell naturally. Make sure he doesn't have any skin problems, which can cause a stronger smell. Sports stores that sell hunting products sometimes carry good shampoos for dogs. Better than the hoohaw you buy at pet stores.
Hmm.. I use the shampoo from my groomers. You can just go to your groomers and ask for your dog to get a bath. They will do it.

Try doggie pawfume.
Could be he's developed a skin problem. Try a good oat meal shampoo. we had one that was oat meal and sea kelp it was so nice. It also made his fur so much softer. I wish I could find it again.
anwser 1:put perfume on him

anwser 2:try washing your dog with kids shampoo...it smells REALLY good
Older dogs do smell stronger and a friend also had a labrador which was a bit pongy. Maybe it's just old age.
Maybe go to the vet so if there is anything bothering him on his fur or skin?
